"Our task is to find out the source of the new design through the study of traditional bamboo crafts and furniture in Taiwan. We were very interested in the bamboo making technology and decided to get the inspiration of the chair instead of using the bamboo itself. We apply bamboo processing technology to steel pipes, which can be easily mass produced and the quality reaches the standard level. Borrowing the handmade techniques of bamboo, such as weaving the sliced parts together and wrapping them together, so that we can give the hard metal a feeling of flexibility.
We designed a table for collection. We chose a technique to cut a section of bamboo vertically into thinner lengths, and then weave these lengths together to create legs and tabletops from a piece of bamboo, and apply this method to steel pipes. The result is structural balance and new design sensitivity, which until now did not exist in steel furniture." -- nendo Sato
