Introduction: With the increase of product complexity, higher requirements are put forward for the ability of designers. Designers need to consider not only the appearance structure of the product, but also the complex interaction process. Designers lack basic knowledge of engineering technology, and open source hardware is an effective tool for designers to combine engineering technology and design. The purpose of the research is to study the design process and the construction of open source hardware knowledge system, and propose a tool kit with card tools as the core to assist designers to use open source hardware to achieve better creativity and in-depth design. This paper analyzes the main application situations and pain points of open source hardware in the design through literature collation.
At present, open source hardware is mainly used in the construction of product interactive prototypes and interactive devices. In the design process, it is mainly involved in the two stages of concept generation and prototyping. Through the analysis of the existing open source hardware auxiliary tools, it is found that the existing auxiliary tools are mainly to structure information, provide support for designers in the prototype construction stage, facilitate designers to retrieve relevant hardware specific information and usage methods, and lack of intervention in the concept generation stage of design.
As a tool with a long history, the card tool has the advantages of supporting ideas and promoting teamwork. In view of the current situation and pain points of open source hardware in design, this paper proposes a toolkit with card tools as the core. The toolkit is composed of card tools and websites connected by QR code and NFC. It provides support for designers in the concept generation and prototyping stages, and promotes the better use of open source hardware in design. This paper analyzes the existing card tools from the perspectives of scope of use, purpose of use, stage of use and specific design, and summarizes the design process of card tools to support the design of card tools. In the verification phase, the effectiveness of the toolkit was verified in undergraduate and graduate classes in the form of workshops, and the deficiencies found in the workshops were improved. Finally, the effectiveness and use process of the improved toolkit are further explained through design practice.
