"Form follows function" is a famous saying by the modernist architect Louis Sharwin. However, which is the first in form and function and which is the second in the future has always been a topic of debate.
In Chinese tradition, there has always been a round stool mainly used in gardens and outdoors, like a big waist drum, most of which are made of ceramics, either plain glaze or overglaze. This kind of "stone drum stool" is quite common in the gardens in the south of the Yangtze River. In the pavilion, three or two friends sit around it, or chat about family affairs, or play chess games, or enjoy the landscape, which is really not very pleasant.
In fact, this style of modeling has never appeared in the West, and the real use of this motivation to design a modern stool similar to the stone drum stool, will certainly be French designer Philip. Stark (Philippe Starck).
If you describe his design, "Bonze" is a stone drum stool, using the statue of "Buddha" as the form, with a face of a Buddha statue on one side, and the Buddha is smiling kindly and even a little dull. Such methods abounded in the 1930s, when they were generally called the "surrealist" era.
The "Buddha's head stool" designed by Stark is very colorful in color, including gold, silver, red, white and black. After the launch of this work, it is very popular in the Western market. The single price is 500-600 euros. It is not a household product designed for ordinary civilians. More than half of this kind of product with unconstrained design is more like a work of art. Most people who buy it put it aside as a sculpture, and it is rare to sit on people.
If there is anything different about Stark's stool, it is naturally its design that is unconstrained and full of game. A person to do the design, to the point can be unconstrained, just like Jin Yong's wind and clear Yang, reached the realm of no tricks.
"Form follows function" is an argument, but Philip Stark uses a different method to redefine the meaning of modeling to products.
