Shenzhen Virtual Reality Technology Co., Ltd., a digital kingdom holding company, held a press conference in Beijing on April 10 to launch the world's first consumer ultra-thin and ultra-light VR glasses X1 set. I participated in the design of the matching A2 neck-hanging wearable host and E3 expansion base. The whole project cycle is close to 200 days. Now I send out the design process to share with you.

The early sketch made three directions. Scheme A and Scheme B are too strengthened for the design of the base, and the connection with the host is not very reasonable. Scheme A uses a contact connection method for simple appearance, but this connection can only charge and cannot transmit big data files synchronously. Scheme B uses a type-c to directly link with the host on the base. The stability of this connection cannot be guaranteed, and the plug is easily damaged during the process of picking and placing the host. After full communication with the customer, Scheme C is the best choice for deepening design.

After the confirmation of the scheme, a more detailed 2D six-view was made. For this kind of product with large surface changes, this process can give a good rational understanding of the design. However, in the later modeling process, it is still found that the 3D space is quite different from the imagined 2D diagram. From sketch to 2D, then 2D to 3D, each refinement is actually a sublimation of the design.

This is the first 3D model, and the surface effect of the sketch is basically preserved. Due to the limitation of motherboard and battery devices, some optimizations have been made in the feeling of the overall curved surface, in order to make better use of the flattening of spatial curved surface processing.

As the assessment progressed, problems that had not been anticipated emerged one by one. One of the biggest problems is the mold forming problem of the bottom shell. In order to produce the overall bottom shell of the product, a two-color injection molding process is used. The outside is a layer of soft TPU soft rubber material, and the inner part is a combination mold of several pieces of hard rubber. In the previous design, due to the distortion of the curved surface, the interior needs to be divided into 5 sections before the mold can be released, which is a great challenge to the mold accuracy and yield. After many reviews and modifications, a balance was finally achieved between the spatial sense of the curved surface and the mass production process.

This base basically retains the original design, which I think is quite satisfactory. The basic shape is relatively simple, all functional designs are hidden, and it is also a complete product as an expansion base alone.

Late at night in the mold factory to guard the mold T0. Although I have experienced the design of many listed products, I still have a strange feeling every time I look at the mold on the machine, debugging and injection molding, just like watching my child be born.
