As a work of art that combines mathematical aesthetics and natural inspiration, the Peco Peco Table Lamp won two design awards this year-the 2024 Red Dot Award and the Display China Crystal Kirin Award.
The design of the Peco Peco Table Lamp was inspired by the Peco Peco in the rainforest. Originally, I wanted to plan a 100 animal-themed design exhibition, but I bought some original products one after another. Later, I found it difficult to make up 100 pieces, so I also designed several pieces to fill in. For example: duck lamp, Peco Peco table lamp.
After watching the animal world for half a month, I tried to find some inspiration in it. When I saw this Peco Peco, I was attracted by its naive image. Isn't this a vivid desk lamp?
Its mouth is a lamp head and its body becomes the base of the lamp. I quickly sketched the bird's appearance and abstracted it. The first version is the manuscript we are looking at now.
In order to determine the best height of the product, I made a model with hard cardboard and placed it on the desktop for repeated deliberation, 30cm, 35cm, 40cm, and finally the size of the product was determined to be 35cm.
After solving the size of the front view, we began to consider the side thickness of the product. If the thickness is too small, the product will be unstable. If the thickness is too thick, the product will appear heavy. After repeated consideration, the side thickness of the product is determined to be 12.5cm.
After watching it for a few months, I always felt that the bird was a bit humpback, so I used the Fibonacci sequence to overlap the product and fine-tune the curve to get our second version.
After watching it for a few months, I always felt that there was something missing. Although the back overlapped with the Fibonacci series, the curve was not vivid enough. Finally, I directly let the back curve throw it out and got a smoother curve. The radian of the oblique cut was also readjusted and became more inclined.
Subtle and precise adjustments were made to the body design to make the overall proportions more harmonious, and we got our third version. The Peco Peco's posture leans forward, as if it will spread its wings and fly high in the next moment. The unbalanced vision makes the lamp more vivid, just like a delicate sculpture, and the solid marble base ensures its dynamic stability.
The brass lampshade simulates the shape of the bird's beak, is embedded with white acrylic shading, and the edge of the inner wall of the plate metal is engraved with trapezoidal grooves, so that the structure at the bottom of the shading plate can be firmly embedded in the bird's beak without screws.
Due to the marble carving processing will appear error, so need to assist artificial polishing, to ensure the smooth transition of the beak and marble, each piece of marble texture are different, making the table lamp into a unique work of art.
Peco Peco table lamp can be used as a desk lighting, can also be used as a bedroom, living room atmosphere lamp, any space will be because of its existence, and full of freedom with the artistic atmosphere.
Of course, after this product came out, I did a lot of weight checking work. Some people would say that it was somewhat similar to Biagio designed by Tobia Scarpa for Italian brand FLOS in 1968, so I compared the two to see the difference.
Biagio's design concept is that a marble is carved into a perfect circle and then cut into two desk lamps. At this time, its interior is still solid. Workers polish the interior with machines, hollowing out the interior, and then assemble the bulb in the hollow structure.
From this, we can know that these two products, whether it is the design logic or the appearance of the product presentation, are essentially different.
The simplest design often requires the most complex thinking. Biagio is still a classic 56 years later. I also hope that my Peco Peco can stand the test of time.
