"Kaiwen Looking at Design Series"-A New Chapter in 2020
Product name: London Olympic Games main torch
Designer: Thomas Heswick
Design Time: 2012
Have you seen the main Olympic torch like a hundred flowers?
After winning the highest international architectural award in the UK-Leiberkin's Most Outstanding International Architectural Work Award, Heswick's reputation suddenly flourished. However, human experience has always been his fundamental idea.
With the increasing influence, Thomas undertook the design of the main torch of the London Olympic Games, offering a wonderful visual feast for the whole world. These main torches consist of 204 copper petals, each of which is engraved with the name of the participating country, implying beauty and unity.
This torch "consists of 204 very small parts that can be raised together and finally erected in the middle of the venue. In order to form a perfect petal torch platform, the shapes of these 204 petals are different, and each piece must be guaranteed to form part of the overall torch bronze flower at the correct angle. At the same time, the actual area and weight of each petal must be exactly the same, and the participating countries should not be mistaken for some discrimination in the design of the torch. After the Olympics, each copper petal can be disassembled and given to all countries as a permanent memorial. In this way, it is not only the way of ignition, but also the torch platform itself has a certain dynamic feeling, which can bring different experiences to people. After the competition, it can be collected by various countries as a symbol of British friendship in the form of gifts, and it will not cause the waste of giant buildings after the Olympic Games in the past.
After the Olympic Games, each country took its own petals, which also symbolized that the spirit of the Olympic Games was as immortal as a flame and continued all over the world.
From the establishment of his own studio at the age of 23 to the age of 41, the main Olympic torch design, one by one important project in the hands of Thomas Heswick, has become as gorgeous, so dazzling, so unforgettable.
What is the ideal of a designer?
This is the case, what can I ask!
