Vein ablation is a method of treating varicose veins. Varicose veins are a condition of abnormal dilation of the veins and blood vessels and impaired function of the blood vessels, usually in the lower extremities. Vein ablation procedures are designed to close or destroy abnormally dilated veins with heat or chemicals, thereby improving blood flow and reducing symptoms.
In a vein ablation procedure, doctors typically use a catheter to introduce heat or chemicals into the affected vein. The thermal energy source may be a laser, radio frequency or other thermal energy source used to heat and close the abnormal vein. Chemicals may also be used to damage the vein wall and cause occlusion. This procedure is usually done through a small incision or a puncture approach without the need for a large incision.
Venous ablation is usually a safe and effective treatment, but it is still necessary to decide whether it is suitable for such surgery based on individual circumstances and doctor's advice. Minor discomfort or pain may occur after treatment, but symptoms are usually relieved in the short term and the appearance and symptoms of varicose veins are improved.
